"etymology_text": "From Proto-Polynesian *po, from Proto-Central Pacific *boŋi, from Proto-Oceanic *boŋi (doublet of poni), from Proto-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *boŋi, from Proto-Central-Eastern Malayo-Polynesian *bəŋi, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *bəʀŋi, from Proto-Austronesian *bəʀŋi. Cognates include Māori pō, Samoan pō and Tongan pō.\nSense of time cycle is based on counting of moon phases emerging not long after sunrise to differentiate between each solar cycle of similar tropical daytime lengths, but has been mostly displaced by lā since David Malo's time. Similar patterns are found in Māori pō and Tahitian pō.",

Cognates include Samoan pō, Hawaiian pō and Tahitian pō.\nSense of 24-hour time cycle is based on division of shifting lunar phases from the new moon (Whiro as the first) to the next (Mutu on the 30th), comparable to Hawaiian pō and Tahitian pō; this sense has since been displaced by rā.",
